I can tell you why Bungie is moving away from numbers.
Back before AC: Black Sail was released, they did a bunch of focus group testing on folks who had never played any AC games asking what put them off the series. One of the things they found was that numbered titles turn off new players, who feel locked out from the franchise. It’s purely a marketing thing, is all.
